You can never have too many pillows! (Impectron Limited)

Just recently I fell off my bike and damaged the tendons in my shoulder and the physio advised me to sleep with one arm resting on a pillow to reduce the strain on my injured shoulder. As I did so, I recalled how when I was pregnant, I had used pillows to support my bump and another between my knees. Pillows are just so useful but do we have enough for all their uses?

Have you thought about having different fillings for different functions?

A high feather content in the pillow will give us the firmness we need behind our back for say reading in bed or if you’re feeling very decadent, having breakfast in bed. If you need to use pillows to raise your foot or leg in bed then again feather pillows are ideal.

Between your knees though or under your bump if you are pregnant, a softer down filled pillow might feel more comforting.

What about water? The Mediflow water pillow ensures that your head floats over a thin layer of water which apparently has been clinically proven to improve the quality of sleep. If you have shoulder or neck problems the pillow promises to minimise those aches and pains. They can be filled to whatever firmness you want and don’t need plumping up during the night. They adjust as you move and being thermally insulated the temperature doesn’t fall during the night so if you want a warm sensation to ease an aching neck or shoulder this can be achieved.

Mediflow Pillow

The idea of herb pillows is very well established and there are numerous different variations on the market.

The base herb for sleeping herb pillows is Hops used for calming nerves and inducing sleep, the other herbs to be added, will depend on personal needs and preference. You can make up your own or look for the combination you want on the Internet. There are many companies who will provide every combination.

Asthma - Betony (Betona Officianalis) Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and Lemon Verbena (Verbena Officianalis),
Insomnia - Lavender (Lavendula Vera) Lemon Thyme (Thymus citrodunus) Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and Chamomile (Matricaria camomilla).

Add a few cloves, pine needles, peppermint, sage, or any herb you desire to vary the fragrance.

Other options are Flax Seed pillows that claim to ease muscle aches and tension. You can heat them up and because of their oil content they retain the heat overnight unlike rice or grain filled pillows. They will also retain their cool temperature if you want to use them for sunburn or hot flushes during the night. Buckwheat pillows are also used to promote good sleep but in addition the shape of the hulls allows air to circulate through the pillow to keep your head cool in summer and warm in winter. This is good for snorers because it prevents the nasal fluid becoming too warm which aggravates snoring. The hulls also move into the hollow of your neck to support it and keep your head level with your spine which is the best position for a good night’s sleep.

There are numerous different shapes of pillows apart from the standard and the square pillow.

Think about buying other shapes for particular areas of the body such as a specific neck pillow to support the neck by providing a deep area for the head to rest and a supportive area to keep the neck in alignment with the spine while sleeping. These can also be known as cervical pillows.

Then for travelling you may need a specific travel pillows to provide support for the neck and head in an upright position. Their "U" shape fits around the back of the neck and keeps the head from slipping into an uncomfortable and possibly harmful position during sleep. Consider keeping one or two in the car for long journeys.

Then there is the Doughnut pillow with a space in the middle to alleviate pressure on the base of the spine while sitting. They can also be used to relieve the symptoms of piles.

Lumbar pillows are great for supporting the inward curve of the lower back if you work in a seated position all day or spend much of your day in the car.

So as you can see there are many many different fillings and shapes to choose from and at different times you may have different needs. You can never have too many pillows!
